Synthetic Breed: Catatonic
21/05/08 || Kampfar
I hate trends, thus also metal a bit. See, if ye are from a place like down under, aka Australia, it is way fucking harder to get noticed than if you hail from the shitty slopes that I do, or Poland for that matter. I bet you my cock and a bit more this fucking lot would have been signed years ago hadn’t it been for the fact they live fucking far away from where most metal fans are located, which is Europe.
I hate Europe, too.
And if you hate chugga, chugga with a passion, well, fuck off already, as this ensemble chugs more than a 2 stroke boat engine, old at it. Yep, this band, or at least album, has more than just a hint of nu-metal mixed in. But, and I stress this, Synthetic Breed doesn’t sound like a bunch of teenagers fervently trying to emulate Slipknot.
Not even close.
I would rather say they sound like a mix of Meshuggah and Darkane, with an emphasis on the former.
More importantly, “Catatonic” is a fine album, excellent for being a self-release, regarding both execution and production. But this lot of Kangaroos isn’t exactly perfect, not doing all the right jumps, so to say. And the number one reason for them not being like me is that their songs have a nasty tendency to end up sounding like one and another; many of the same tricks, albeit good ones, repeated to near (groove) death before this extravagant demo ends. I’m sure fewer songs would have helped, but they nonetheless need to give their songs more of a personality.
I recommend the band a listen to Trepalium – which at their best plays a fucking groovy and also close to trademarked kind of death. But in this next breath I urge labels to pay heed to them here Australians.
Or, even better, to fuck off and die.
